The first landfill energy recovery power plant in Brazil’s Southern region was installed in the municipality of Itajaí, State of Santa Catarina, under a project contracted by Itajaí Biogás e Energia S.A. We installed a 1.1 MW generator set, which generates clean, renewable energy, given that the biogas is produced by the natural decomposition of municipal solid waste (RSU) deposited in the landfill.

How does it work? The biogas is extracted from the landfill by means of catchment wells and is transported to a sewage treatment station prior to being used in the engines.
