Social projects promoted by the branch of Rondonia aim at engaging Guascor’s employees and consolidating the relationship between the company and the community.

Guascor doesn’t want only to contribute financially to the social projects of the power plants, schools surroundings, communities and entities in which they hold partnership, but engage their employees to make the difference. With educational and conscious actions, the goal is to bring a shift in thought and behavior on the diversity and develop individuals to be better people and better professionals.

Therefore, the branch of Rondonia adopts other measures that aim the sustainable development: lectures and programs on environmental education and quality of life, such as gymnastics, encouraging s

ports, and selective collection, domestic and electrical hazards security, implementation of a communitarian vegetable-garden, and reuse of materials.

Proof of this are the first places the branch achieved at SESI Work Quality Award (PSQT) since 2007. See how the branch has been building value and becoming closer to the community.

The Environmental Education Program promotes lectures about caring the environment, selective collection and security, in schools of the communities where Guascor operates. After the lectures, students, teachers and employees did the planting of seedlings, such cabbage palm, in the courtyard of the school. A painting competition among students in 2010 under the theme “Caring for the Environment”, in Buritis, Cujubim, Machadinho d’Oeste e São Francisco do Guaporé, had the drawings displayed in outdoors in the plants.

This work had led the branch of Rondonia to the podium of the PSQT Award, in the state stage, Social Environmental Development category – Big Corporations. The program has already served 18 schools and approximately nine thousand students in the state and municipal education since 2007, when it began. “Another victory that mirrors the line of work and the thought of our company: the involvement and participation of all our employees”, said Joaquim Pereira, president of Guascor.

Communitarian Seedling & Recycling

In Campo Novo, the team has acted on two fronts: communitarian vegetable-garden and children’s education. The employees planted lettuce, parsley, scallions, zucchini, cilantro, tomato, eggplant, arugula and cabbage and are already reaping the rewards. Vegetables further enriched the menu of the team, who had an orchard with tangerine, banana, and mango, among others. The surplus of the harvest was donated to local schools and in addition the employees “put their hands dirty” building a playground with swing, spin-spin, seesaw and a new covered area for kids to play.

Not only to inform. The important thing is also to practice. It was so Rondonia branch encouraged the community to make a selective collection. The participants in the Environmental Education Program also received garbage recycled from oil drums used to supply diesel engines of Guascor’s plants. A sustainable and ecological solution.

Choral

Choral

It all started in August 2004, when Wilson Ferreira sought a regent of choral. He wanted to do the Christmas Carols with a Choral formed by employees and their families. He barely knew what it would be.

Well… A group was assembled; rehearsals began, one after another. There was no lack of integration and fun. The Operation and Maintenance Centers from Ariquemes, Porto Velho and Rolim de Moura became the stage for the performance of the Choral until the day arrives.

It arrived. It was December 17. The premiere took place during the Guascor celebration party, which included the presence of Joaquim Pereira, the president of the Group. The nervousness was overcome by the exciting performance. And that was the kickoff for a successful carrier. The Choral programming included a tour presentation in local TV and CD burning.

On 17 December of that year, the premiere took place during the confraternization party in Porto Velho, which included the presence of the President, Joaquim Pereira. The nervousness was overcome by exciting performance. And that was the kickoff for a successful career. The Choral programming included the Coral presentation in local TV and CD burning.

The branch of Acre was visited by the Choral in200, what is affectionately remembered by Nadia: “We traveled by bus, and on the road we rehearsed enough, aware of our responsibility. It was the first time we integrate our branches in a social activity. The presentation was in Rio Branco, we were very well received by our colleagues and their families. I think that the final feeling was the same for everybody – the gathering of a large family, “she recalls.

Seven years later, the choral continues to delight the employees and their families. Nádia Siqueira and Claudionor Costa are ahead of the team preparing the launch of the 2nd CD this year, on the eve of Candle of Nazareth (Círio de Nazaré), an event that happens in Belem do Pará.

The repertoire of the second record has already been chosen, and we can only anticipate that the selection of titles gives a special tribute to the array. Worth the wait!

The picture on this newspaper cover shows the current Choral lineup:

Conductor and assistant – Raquel Lyrio e Mauro da Silva;

Sopranos – Ariana Ferreira, Ariany Rolim, Gilmara Ribeiro, Ellen Ane de Melo, Yasmin Furtado, Viviane de Moraes, Odineide Souza and Jascilene Leão;

Altos – Edna Terezinha Nascimento, Edilene Costa, Neuza Carvalho, Simone Furtado, Nádia Siqueira, Danielle Cavalcante and Natália Siqueira;

Tenors – Tayron Moraes, Adriano Ferreira, Anderson Bechara, Youri Furtado, Rogério do Carmo, Francisco Carlos de Souza, Lueno Royer, Reinalton Santana, Cleber dos Reis and Francisco de Assis da Silva.

Last names are not similar coincidence: the Choral integrates wives, fathers, mothers and children of employees!

Eletrobras Amazonas Energia launches off grids site in Sobrado (AM);
the project was developed by a consortium between Guascor and Kyocera.

A great emotion gripped Sobrado, the banks of Rio Negro, in Novo Airão (AM): it’s time to celebrate the arrival of electricity in the community, thanks to the installation of a solar power and an off grid site distribution system. The Project, coordinated by Eletrobras Amazonas Energia (Eletrobras Amazon Energy) and developed under the Light for Everybody Program (LPT), involves the installation of 12 plants in Autazes, Barcelos, Beruri, Eirunepé and Maués. Guascor is proud in participating in the implementation of systems, in partnership with Kyocera.

Photovoltaic modules convert solar energy into electricity, stored in batteries and distributed by off grid site to homes and consumer units, such as school and church. The prepaid system and the control of the operation are done remotely, from headquarters of the Eletrobras Amazonas Energia, in Manaus. In Sobrado, 15 families are benefited; all projects benefit more than 1,000 people.

This billing system allows consumers to buy, in the community, a card similar to that of mobile phones with value equivalent to the use intended. Each residence received a device that triggers an audible alarm indicating that the “credits” are ending.

The plant inauguration took place on July 8. Participants: CEO of Eletrobras Amazonas Energia, Marcos Aurélio Silva, vice-governor of the State, José Melo de Oliveira, LPT coordinator at Eletrobras holding, Ricardo Valadares, LPT manager in the Amazon State, Radyr Gomes, and local authorities. The president of Guascor, Joaquim Pereira, and his team accompanied the event. Marco Rossi, vice-president of Equipment and Environmental Solutions at Dresser-Rand, took the opportunity to know the work of Guascor on the isolated system in Amazon.

Best life

With energy 24 hours/day, riverains from Sobrado pass to save an average cost of R$150.00, cost of purchasing fuel for the generator that served for only three hours. The arrival of continuous electricity changes the reality: considering the hot weather, to keeping food in the refrigerator is new. “Electricity is the fuel of progress. Everyone’s life takes on a new meaning”, said the community leader, Raymond Alves. Now, you can realize the dream of watching television at home without interruptions, and the conditions of education, with evening classes and internet.

The electricity alone cannot solve all problems from Sobrado. But it is a path that starts to go, not only improving the quality of life, such as access to more information and training people. In the event, the deputy governor, José Oliveira, recalled his own story: the poor boy that learned to read at 12 and got there! “Maybe one of these boys do not turn a governor,” he said in emotional speech.

With diligent and organized team, the branch of Para controls the operation of 23 plants since 1997

The engineer Luiz Carlos Bastos is the general manager of the first Guascor’s branch in Brazil. Under his leadership, a dedicated team enables continuous operation of power plants in 23 locations.
“During ten years”, he says, “The numbers of plants attended impress by showing a growth rate above the national indices”. With data recently published by the IBGE, he points out: “While population growth in these localities was 19.1% in ten years, in the same period the consumption of electricity increased by 82.2%”.

“Electricity consumption per capita has grown considerably,” he says. “People have come to rely on the stability and our capacity to meet the increased demand, and incorporated new consumption habits, improving their quality of life”. This is evident when we face with economic and social development of municipalities, which presents more dynamism in trade, diversity in industrial activities and possibility to study at night, among other important achievements.

Even the UTEs, as the plants are known in the localities of Guascor, grew in importance. They have become technological, environmental and even cultural reference centers. “We received visits from schools, explain the plant operation and take the opportunity to provide environmental education”, tells Ronaldo Coelho, responsible for the Environment Division of the company.

“In a matter of fact, our work goes far beyond the production of energy”, says Ronaldo. “We participate in community life as much as our operators-maintainers, who are also consumers and opinion leaders, with prominent role in the localities where they live and work, “he adds.

On the initiative of Ronaldo, the branch and 23 plants have libraries that were named with the names of employees, pioneers of the company, regardless of hierarchy. The books are on loan to employees and the public.

Winning vegetable-garden

The branch of Para is literally reaping the fruit of a communitarian vegetable-garden in Muaná plant in the region of Marajó.

This time, the harvest came in the form of the First Prize in SESI Quality at Work (PSQT) in the state phase, Environmental Development category – Large Business. The garden of Muaná is maintained since 2008 by a partnership between Guascor, City Hall, Technical Assistance Company and Rural Extension (Emater) and municipal secretaries.

The production is donated to the plant’s employees, their families and supporters of the project. The garden receives visits from schools and helps teaching the basics of healthy eating and environmental preservation. In 2010, more than 3,000 people were benefited by the project, which is coordinated by Rosangela Correa, social resources analyst.

The area has developed other projects in 2010 as:
Environmental agents – training of 18 environmental “inspectors” in Monte Alegre, in the Lower Amazon;
Athletes of the Future – monitoring of 85 children and adolescents with sports in the SESI-PA, in Belém.

Sesi invited the band Pura Energia (Pure Energy) (formed by co-workers from the branch of Para) to perform at the awards event, which had the support of some members of the Choral from the branch of Rondônia.

Taxi de Afuá

Taxi de Afuá

Visit Afua, in the region of Marajo, is a unique experience. The city, with just over 9,000 inhabitants, is built entirely on stilts and surrounded by water, like Venice, Italy. The palafitte is a a wise ingenuity that allows the riverside population live naturally with the oscillation of the water level of the Rio Afua, a tributary of the Amazon, influenced by tides. In Afua, the cars don’t circulate, but the traffic of bicycles, bike-taxes and even pedal-powered school buses is intense. What most impresses visitors is the cleanliness of the city. You do not see litter: everyone knows that when the water rises, all that was dumped improperly returns to the surface. The waste collection has right schedule that everyone respects.

Arriving at the plant, high and well protected, if you have idea of the complexity of operationalizing motor drives: “When necessary, we have to bring down the catwalk, put support bases, in or out with the engine and rebuild the bridge after the service ended”, tells Lúcio Ferreira, chief of the plant.

In ten years, the installed capacity grew more than 90% as a result of increased consumption due to system reliability.

Marajoara's sturdy stools

Marajoara

Like the rest of the city, Afua plant breathes sustainability. We find there an example of use of lubricating oil filters replaced. They are transformed into beautiful, lightweight and sturdy stools, with the help of a neighboring timber. In addition, the protective screen of the filters is to replace guardrails of aero-fans, part of the engine cooling system. “The plot of the screen is better than the original grid of aero-fans, because it prevents unwanted insects from entering the engine”, explains the plant’s staff, proud of his work.

And it has the same effect as the original grid. Helder Souza, manager of Operations and Maintenance branch for, explains: “We tested for two years and found that the temperatures recorded are perfectly normal and acceptable within the setting specified for the motor”. Yes, Marajoara Venice is an example of sustainability.

Biogas

Biogas

Guascor instills the first plant to use biogas from a sewage treatment plant in the country

It has been entered into operation a pioneer plant in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo. The energy production will be held from the use of biogas from a sewage treatment plant – WWTP (ETE). Guascor was hired by Ambient, utility services responsible for treatment and disposal of sewage of the city to provide generators, build the plant and perform preventive and corrective maintenance.

The plant has two generators for biogas cogeneration, totaling 1.5 MW of installed Power. The energy production will be as follows: wastewater treatment at ETE Ribeirão Preto generates 8,000 m3 of biogás. The biogas contains between 60% and 65% methane, a gas that will be used as fuel for generators, which transform the gas into electric power. The energy will be for ETE’s own use and will allow a considerable reduction in electricity costs.

The project is doubly green. Biogas is a renewable energy source, i.e., its use does not wear the planet’s natural resources and generates a “clean” energy. The project was developed by the engineering department of the OHL, the Spanish group which the environment is part and provides a parallel system. In times of lower demand, the system will meet any need of ETE. In peak hours, the interconnected network will begin operating, to boost the supply. “We were happy to rely on a partnership with an innovative project in Guascor”, says Paulo Roberto de Oliveira, CEO of Ambient.

Ambient’s responsible initiative together with Guascor’s technology contributes to the country to know a new concept of sustainable energy solution. Guascor Group has developed 75 similar plants in over ten countries and hopes to spread this news also in Brazil.

Training ensures success in implementation of solar projects

Guascor innovates once again by associating the successful implementation of a pioneering project, such as the solar mini network, to the training of future users. As a corporate sponsor of Vaga Lume Association, Guascor supports all activities of this award-winning institution, while they learn a lot from it. Recently, they started together a more promising and revolutionary partnership: the association has trained representatives from 12 isolated communities of the Amazon before the completion of works. Two representatives from each community were invited to participate in a four-day meeting in Manaus – AM, which aimed to form multipliers to teach their communities to make the conscious and sustainable use of the solar energy. The meeting was a success and the partnership promises!
