The branch of Acre has always been a huge challenge for us. In 1999, we assume the responsibility for producing electricity in existing generating facilities. Experience has shown us that a trained staff, aware of the continuous operation of the plants, allows identifying any failure in the operation. This is our biggest obsession. This is our greatest asset.

Today, ten years later, we know that size does not matter. The procedures developed in the management, ranging from the creation of the operator-maintainer to complete mastery of the logistics business, are applicable to all plants. It may be Cruzeiro do Sul, where we serve more than 200,000 people, or Assis Brasil, where we have just over 6,000. The same happens with the number of generators, either 30 or four units. Our professionals are prepared to face any challenge.

Wherever we look in the light, it validates what the branch develops in Acre: paved roads and streets, thriving commerce and population multiplied.

Our employees treat their activities with total autonomy, following the concept ever repeated during trainings: “If you want to thrive, get ahead of the business”. All equipment is handled in a sustainable manner as part of the transformation that we wish for ourselves and for the benefit of customers.

This makes us look forward with confidence, because the experience brings solid capital that allows us to assume with serenity challenges in this exciting mission to generate energy in remote regions.

Cruzeiro do Sul: the largest field test of the company

Cruzeiro do Sul is not only the largest plant operated by Dresser-Rand Guascor, it is also our greatest testing field. Its results offer a great richness and variety of data, which are shared in both the operational environment as in R&D in Spain, which enables the manufacture of better and more efficient equipment.

When we talk about sustainable generation, the principle that rules all operational procedures is to reduce pollutants from the environment. Every action focused on developing technological improvements associated with the optimization of plans and maintenance programs, in accordance with correct procedures and efficient operation, brings benefits that are reflected positively on the performance and efficiency of the equipment. By taking advantage of an efficient chemical energy from the fuel, you can significantly reduce emissions of contaminants, which allows us to maintain concentrations of pollutants within the limits set by environmental policies, both national and world affairs.

In this context, we carefully evaluate our operation; we identified the need for additional investment in plants and acquired new engines. All these measures promote improvements in techniques and the availability of electricity before the demands, reduce maintenance costs, decrease fuel consumption and guarantee the electricity supply quality to the customer.

The set of actions and evaluations is wide. See the description of some:

Actions in Cruzeiro do Sul

  1. Optimization of the cooling system by replacing the cooling towers (open circuit), of high consumption of water and electricity, by air-coolers of low power consumption and better thermal efficiency, in order to avoid excess with fuel and gain power.
  2. Installation of gauges U in all generators to monitor and maintain the air supply system within the operational limits of efficiency and also to reduce fuel consumption.
  3. Implementation of forced lubrication heads (prototype) in advanced experiences with the R&D in Spain.
  4. Implementation of an injection system with reverse order, enabling a reduction of approximately 5% in specific fuel consumption of the Guascor generator tested and approved.
  5. Implementation of specific gauge for pressure monitoring of gases from the crankcase of the engine (in testing phase, also providing data to the R&D area).
  6. Shirt test cylinder for engine, with a new supplier in order to extend the life of the powertrain and the consequent efficiency of Guascor engines.
  7. Optimization of procedures and predictive maintenance techniques to reduce the number and frequency of faults, thus reducing maintenance costs and increasing availability and reliability of the generator park.
  8. Individual control of starting and stopping a group of generators (order charge) in order to equalize the Average Daily Operation Registration (RMDO) and match load curves, with permanent monitoring to reduce the specific fuel consumption, managing maintenance cycles and preserve the life of the equipment.

Operation and Maintenance Center in Cruzeiro do Sul

Overcoming logistics obstacles

Cruzeiro do Sul concentrates the largest volume of items in Acre. With restricted access, depending on the conditions of navigability of the rivers, we must carefully plan and manage the available stock “We still have to overcome some suppliers conditions who can only deliver to Rio Branco, which requires us to hire an additional freight to make the pieces reach their final destination, “says Marcos Santos, Storage manager in São Paulo “The operation needs to take full advantage of the availability of the items, to prevent any interruption, “said Olivar Mesquita. To complete the sustainable operation circuit, in Cruzeiro do Sul is also located the Special Recovery Center (CRE), which renews the generating sets and returns in full working order.

The newness of SESI Quality at Work Award (PSQT) in 2010 was to be able to choose two subject areas to present successful cases established and registered by the company.

We discussed our best alternatives and decided to compete in two areas: Personnel Management and Socio-environmental Development. The result could not have been better!

We climbed the podium twice in the Large Company category: first place, with the work “Process of reintegration of employees in the labor market”, and secondly, with the Environmental Education Program.

Doação de muda

Doação de muda

The concern about the quality of life of our employees is fundamental to the management at Dresser-Rand Guascor. The company innovates once again reintegrating the former employees in the labor market, providing training and guidance to facilitate their entry into other companies and businesses. The actions were developed where our plants have been interconnected: Epitaciolândia, Sena Madureira, Capixaba and Xapuri, and 22 employees were benefited. The figures indicate that during the two-year project, 9.09% were relocated in the same segment of power generation (competition) and 13.64% in other sectors, 31.82% have decided to open his own business and 45.45% were transferred to other areas of operations of Dresser-Rand Guascor.

The initiative, although uncommon, was necessary. We needed to minimize the impact of the shutdown of our staff. To preserve self-esteem is one of the goals. Therefore, we extended the benefits of the holder and their dependents up to three months, we offer counseling and home visits, we relocated the employee and family, and we encouraged them to take courses, training and lectures. The whole process was coordinated by the Human Resources Department and also involved professionals specialized in psychology

For our employees, to participate in the training promoted the opportunity of discovering new skills and competencies, their relocation to other plants, preparation for public procurement, and incentive to open their own business.

The result of the relocation process showed the efficiency of Dresser-Rand Guascor not to compromise the productivity of those who remained in the company and satisfaction for having been engaged in supporting those who have been relocated. We believe that sustainable development is a continuous process, a cycle that does not conclude only with good business results, but with the validation of the quality of investment made in human resources.

Paulo Adriano de Lima

Paulo Adriano de Lima

Paulo Adriano de Lima, 38, was born in Xapuri, Acre. In November 1999, he knew that a private company in the electricity sector was selecting people for a thermal power plant. He tried to be admitted and managed to. Despite having worked as an operator at another dealership and know the functions that would be executed, Paul wondered at the change to the new job. At Dresser-Rand Guascor, operators are also supporters. This means being directly connected to the control of operations.

He used to take care of the generators as well as the area occupied by the plant. There, he cultivated the orchard and the garden. His performance led him in 2003 to take the position of head of the plant. “I took advantage of the opportunity to learn and I have evolved with the company”, he says.

In May 2009, when there was the interconnection of Xapuri, expected by contract, the company treated its employees in a unique way to face the new reality, preparing them for the market. In partnership with SESI, training courses were offered, increasing the chances of professionals who had to discontinue their work.

Paulo Adriano took the opportunity to participate in courses and provided a public tender offered by Eletrobrás. Today, he works as a technician in the Laboratory of Electrical Measurement (DCN) of the Eletrobras Distribuição Acre. The certainty that his experience and technical training made a difference in the achievement becomes clear when he says: “I am very proud to be reference as a professional developed by Guascor”.

He said that the energy sector “is watching” the employee of Guascor, because the quality of training offered by the company is highly valued.

What remains are the memories and the nostalgia for a good time…

Jacimar Antonio da Silva, coordinator of Social Responsibility of SESI / AC

Jacimar Antonio da Silva, coordinator of Social Responsibility of SESI / AC

Jacimar Antonio da Silva, coordinator of Social Responsibility of SESI / AC summed up Dresser-Rand Guascor in short, amazing. For him, the company makes the difference in the market because, in addition to generating electricity, is also concerned about the quality of life of communities in isolated regions. “I think the major difference in Acre branch is the quality of its leadership and management. For me, the spirit of cooperation, commitment, dedication and transparency have always been of great admiration”, he says.

Dresser-Rand Guascor is a company that aims to promote social and environmental actions in the regions where it operates and, therefore, is responsible for the impact of their practices in the branch of Acre. And goes beyond when it spends part of his program to the community and the environment, like donating vegetables and fruits, promoting social action in schools and helping to preserve the municipalities with recycling bins made of diesel fuel drum.

The last work of the branch – Award winner SESI / AC – has shown as Dresser-Rand Guascor can cross the imaginary line between the employee and the organization to engage with those who contributed to its history and today are no longer part of it. The Program for Dismissal was considered, by the coordinator of SESI, one of the most innovative and processors of all actions undertaken so far, and a model to be replicated and disseminated. A pioneering initiative to raise awareness and mobilization is as an effective exercise of social responsibility.

Thrilled, Jacimar says that “in Acre, we are more than partners; we are the dreams that we dream together”.

The Borboleta Azul Project (Blue Butterfly Project) prepares youth served by the Association of Parents and Friends of Exceptional Children (Apae-SP), encourages social inclusion of people with disabilities in society and the labor market, and promotes their adaptation to daily activities. In the expeditions conducted by Outward Bound Brazil (OBB), there are activities that combine outdoor adventure and personal and professional development. The goal is giving young people more autonomy, security and consciousness of their potential.

The advisory of the board, Miriam Aguirre, participated on the trip. Intense cold, with nights in tent and much walking, so were the four days in Forest Reserve, in Campos do Jordão (SP) .“ The vulnerability of them shows that deep down we are all equal”, he says. “I am proud to belong to a company that embodies social responsibility”.

The company decided to support and encourage the inclusion of these people in the labor market, and hiring Flávia Cezar, who participated in the expedition at the beginning, the idea of integrating someone from the project has materialized.

Flávia is 22 years old, acts as an administrative assistant, has secondary education, took courses in computing and was a volunteer at Radio Gazeta. This is her first formal job. “People are super nice to me, and it gives me a good feeling”, says Flavinha, as she is called by all.

Very helpful, she helps in the reception and the staff of the Financial to organize payments and protocols. More and more integrated to the everyday office, she says: “Everyone welcomed me very well, and I love working. I feel good here”. This is also exciting for us, we learn a lot from her.

With new headquarters, a second book and several awards, Vaga Lume completes ten years old with a feeling of mission accomplished. So it began their celebrations by launching a campaign called Plant a History.

Children, youth and adults in São Paulo, and 170 communities in the Amazon have been mobilized to participate in this action. The event was held in October in different locations simultaneously. The idea was to involve people, organizations and business partners to develop cultural activities, from reading a book and group dynamics to a workshop for the training of mediators in the community.

Dresser-Rand Guascor, as sponsor, supported the project. For the company, it is important to share experiences with different cultures. The seat was filled with children. Only in this unit 120 people have circulated.

In the Amazon, that number has multiplied. The activities in the communities were reading mediation, cultural gymkhana, theater, dance, choral and soirée. They also enjoyed the presentation and production of handmade books, ring of stories, video projections and sports competitions. The company and Vaga Lume share the same concept: promoting cultural exchange enriches organizations, their employees and communities.

Talking briefly about branch of Rondonia is a great challenge. For over ten years, we have been broken paradigms and conquered new heights for an operation as complex and diverse as the assistance to the isolated populations. In the early years, to meet our client (Eletrobras Rondonia Distribution), we have assumed 47 locations. Even after the connection made by the distributor and the activities started focusing in 25 locations, the wide variety and challenge in managing an operation with a logistic equation is not very favorable, the satisfactory result of customers and employees makes this challenge a great cause of pride for all.

Considering our service area of about approximately 42,000 km and every variety of access: paved roads or not, boat and air in exceptional situations, we have developed a logistics engineering that allows to align the ability of our staff and resources to maintain the availability of supply steady state. The difficulties have added knowledge to our experience.

It is not coincidence that at the branch of Rondonia is the model plant. In Buritis we have implemented a model of the plant that has become a reference for putting together the conditions of operational, functional and environmental excellence. The growing demand has led us to the breakthrough in operation, control, equipment management, empowerment of people. The integration with the communities they serve not only increased due to the expansion of our programs, but also motivated us to overcome our own levels of quality.

Distributed energy is an interesting solution; not only for isolated locations, but within a dynamic profile of economic activities that require continuous or high level generation. What we have learned in Rondonia places us in a status of unique company: able to develop a totally innovative project, take over the management of diversified generating facilities, and develop a set economically balanced.

Wilson Ferreira

The branch of Rondonia knows that for a synchronized coordination it is necessary to maintain frequent presence in the localities, and promote integration and quality management.

“No engineering or process would overcome what we consider to be the real differential: the integration of the team represented by the Choral. Of the alternatives proposed by Conexão Guascor editor, Marcela Bragatto, the unanimity of the choice made everybody proud”, says Wilson. “We have chosen the Choral and not a plant as cover, because it represents the integration of employees and families and that is what best defines the spirit of teamwork: committed and in harmony, we evolve in search of the most fine-tuning, in the operation and life”.

Operation and Maintenance Centers:
a fine-tuning team

In a state as large as Rondonia is to keep the quality of continuous power generation is a challenge that requires expertise in logistics. The only way to attend with agility the demand of spare parts and services, such as predictive maintenance , preventive and corrective, is strategically distributing the localization of the Operation and Maintenance Centers (COMs), so that each need be concluded efficiently. All of them are under the command of José Furtado.

The COM has as main activities receipt, storage and distribution of consumable materials (imported and domestic) to meet the preventive and corrective maintenance including the most important, depending on the severity of the faults occurred in the generators.

The planning and monitoring of maintenance is an important part of the functions of a COM programming executions, direct contact with the plants and development of actions to improve physical and operational tasks, including regular updating on the details of the operation and maintenance, which are discussed in regular meetings every 60 days.

The daily routine of COM has other duties such as monitoring the requests of employees to HR, training, financial controls, maintenance and servicing of company fleet vehicles, among others.
The branch of Rondonia is very proud to be cited as an example, when discussing the organization of their Operation and Maintenance Centers.

“In order to meet the standards of operation, security, protection, reliability and economy, he counts on a team prepared to attend the requirements of the company”, says Furtado.

The concept of making a plant with more technology and equipment, less consumption and to meet the growing demand arose in Buritis. The project was motivated by the growth in timber activity, installed there. The plant, planned considering the capitalization of experience with such diversity, allowed the plant to become worthy of an award (subrogation) for lower fuel consumption, 275 l/MWh.

In 2007, Buritis adopted a supervisory system for operation: the operator controls the motors only with the computer. This assured the expected results. A recovery area and maintenance of engines was also implemented within the new Center for Special Repairs (CRE), whose chief is Nailton Diniz.

Nova Buritis, as we use to call our plant today consists of 17 generators GUASCOR model SF 360 and three, SF 480 – can be expanded up to 24 generators. The new unit is everything that is ultimate in thermal generation diesel.

The generators are mounted on shipping containers fully soundproofed, remotely operated by a modern supervisory system, equipped with all necessary controls and protections essential to the personal safety of the plant. Control systems, fully electronic, give to generators an income-generation, associated with a specific consumption of diesel in the order of 275 l / MWh.

The team of the plant is composed of nine operators, one chief and three maintenance operators among electricians and mechanics.

We also have a repair shop associated with the plant, with five service professionals, prepared to provide preventive and corrective maintenance on plant equipment, and other plants.

A major investment has been made to provide an increase in installed capacity to reach 15,000 KW in the end of this year, and the structure prepared to reach 24,000 KW.

With an approximate area of 30,000 m2, the plant is located near the city, not interfering in their daily dynamics. But social works also highlight: the plant has community garden, held an illustrations contest in schools, and the winning entries were printed on a billboard, and the planting of native seedlings in the area of the plant is expected to increase, as a compensatory action by the consumption of paper in our branch located in São Paulo. It is the first action of this kind in the country, and once again we were honored for participating. Thus, among all, we have built an exemplary model from which we are all proud.

Wilson Ferreira.
